Yahel: Student Division
Professional Director: Dr. Michal Lerner
Yahel Support unit was established by the Department of Education and the Dean of Students to focus on two main areas of activity for University of Haifa students: diagnosis and support.
Yahel's staff includes diagnostic professionals, academic adviser, and an assistive technology consultant, all of who are experts in learning disabilities (M.A. in diagnoses and treatment of learning disabilities). The staff aims to assist the individual student in recognizing his or her abilities and managing his/her difficulties by acquiring efficient learning strategies and getting academic help in different courses.
A student diagnosed as having a learning disability and/or ADHD is entitled to support from Yahel throughout the course of his or her studies at the University of Haifa.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is carried out in the student's mother tongue (currently available in Hebrew, Arabic, and Russian) and tests a number of abilities: reading, writing, arithmetic operations, attention, and academic abilities.
The diagnostic process in Yahel is made up of three meetings, two meetings to take standardized diagnostic tests, and a third meeting to sit one-on-one with a diagnostic specialist who provides a full explanation to the student on the outcome of his or her assessment.
The final diagnosis is based on the following:
Results of the standardized test
Developmental and academic history
Information acquired from a personal interview with the diagnostic specialist.
Students who were diagnosed in the past can send their latest report via e-mail to: mlerner@univ.haifa.ac.il . After examining the assessment report the entitlement for accommodations is determined. Then, a letter of accommodations is sent to the student and to the Academic Head of his/her department.
